Travel information

A sailing trip is always influenced by wind and weather-conditions. Here in the North-Sea and the Baltic-Sea, it may happen that it is a bit colder on the water than on land, or that a quick change of the weather changes sailing-conditions entirely.

On our trips there is always some time to introduce you to the “theory” of sailing (meteorology, navigation, sailing techniques, knotting and seamanship).

Nothing forgotten? Take a look at the pack-list. For the organization of beds on board we have provided a plan for you which is available here.

Theorie

Sailing is a complex matter. As a sailor you have to be familiar with many disciplines, like:

  • Physics – understand how the wind acts on the sails and how it moves the ship through the water
  • Geography and Mathematics – for a safe navigation from point A to point B
  • Knots – so everything remains fixed when it has to stay fixed and can be released when it is necessary
  • Meteorology – knowledge of weather systems and regional weather conditions for accurate route planning of a sailing ship

On our trips there is always time to inform you on all matters of seamanship. Just ask the crew, they will be happy to answer your questions. There is always some time left for a lesson on sea marks, the principle of sailing or the weather in Europe.

Just ask the crew, they will be happy to answer your questions.

Boardboutique

Various T-shirts and hooded sweatshirts with the Stortemelk print are on offer on board the Stortemelk. They are very comfortable t-shirts and warm sweatshirts to wear while traveling, but of course also as a souvenir or as a gift for friends or family.

We had a couple of bags sewn from our old sails. They are really unique, because every bag looks different.

In Rostock our berth is in the Stadthafen, in the neighberhood of a big blue crane. This is on the Haedge Halbinsel on the Kohlenkai, opposite of the Stadttheater and the Braugasthaus “Zum alten Fritz” (which adress is: Warnowufer 65, 18057 Rostock)
